Cat5 KVM Matrix Switch system
The DX matrix system is the latest in Datacentre management equipment from Minicom. The system is a scalable design allowing multi user bios level control of your computer equipment from either local control stations or via ip remote control.
The System interface of the Minicom DX unit is called AIM. This is an embedded operating system running on the user station that supplies the benefits of management functionality normally only available in a software solution.
The Design of the System is simple. Each user or control point has a user station ( DXU ) box. This box is cabled with a single UTP cable to the main DX unit ( DX432/DX832). On the server side there is a small dongle (XRICC) for each server and serial device. Each dongle is also cabled to the main DX unit. When more than 32 server ports are required the main units can be cascaded from server ports to user ports.
An example of a 4 user 256 server layout would be - 4 x DXU user stations connected by a total of 4 utp cables ( one each) to the user ports 1-4 of the main DX432 unit. DX432 server ports 1-4 would then connect to the User ports of the 2nd DX432 Chassis, ports 5-8 would connect to the 3rd chassis and so on until ports 29-32 connected to the last chassis. This give 1 main unit with 8 units cascaded off it in a second level - each of those 2nd level units has 32 ports giving a total of 256 servers.
Where any user station might require remote IP KVM access the DXU is replaced with a DXUIP - this means that user station can be remote controlled from anywhere on the network using a web browser.
Using the DX is easy - and a lot nicer than clunky old 'pick the name from the on screen menu' systems where. The DX User stations run an xwindows style linux desktop with icons representing each dongle. This means you can group the dongles into windows as you see fit and restrict user access on a per dongle basis. When a graphical dongle (eg - PC/PS2) is selected the system switches full screen to that port. When a serial console dongle is selected the desktop shows a window with serial emulation software (by coincidence - also called minicom) and allows connection from this window.
As seen in the picture above - The unit can also be interfaced to external appliances such as IP Power rails using the serial support feature
